When Mies was appointed director of the Armour Institute (founded in 1893, later renamed the Illinois Institute of Technology), Wright was asked to give an introduction. Recollections vary on what happened next, but most agree that Wright got up before the assembled dignitaries and said, in a pointed reference to Wright's own influence over the development of Modern Architecture in Europe, 'I gave you Mies van der Rohe', and sat down.
